Imagine trying to go through life by eating one meal a week. If you tried to do so, you would quickly waste away to nothing. Sadly, most Christians believe that they can be strong Christians despite the fact that the only sermon that they hear all week is in church on Sunday morning. According to the Bible, "faith comes from hearing" the Word of God. The scripture then asks, "how will they hear without a preacher?" We therefore know that we can build up our faith in God by listening to his preached word. Jesus said that His "words are spirit, and they are life."
According to the Book of Proverbs:
My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings.
Do not let them depart from your sight; keep them in the midst of your heart.
For they are life to those who find them, and health to all their whole body.
Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it {flow} the issues of life.
In the same way that we eat physical food to nourish our physical bodies, we must regularly and consistently partake of the spiritual food of God's Word if we want to be strong and healthy spiritually. Contrary to modern popular opinion, there is no other way to become a successful follower of Jesus. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God..." It is the Word of God that brings life, and without a steady diet of that life-giving Word, our spiritual future will be bleak.
